Not Just Skin Deep
May 1, 2005By Joneen Horton

In a world where beauty is often dictated by the media, the latest Hollywood trend or the newest surgery technique, what is the true definition of beauty?  Is beauty only skin-deep?

She Looked Great Until…

"She is so-o-o beautiful!  Her makeup is flawless! Did you see that suit? I know it’s not an Armani knock off!”

"Yeah, I saw everything.  Did you hear her yelling at her assistant?  She may look good but she has a nasty attitude!  I wouldn’t want to have to work with her.”

The above dialog is an example of a conversation that we have all either participated in or been the topic of discussion.  It doesn’t matter what clothes you wear, the style of your hair, if your makeup is impeccable or nails manicured; a vile attitude makes you very unattractive.

"Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For ye are like unto whited sepulchres[1], which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men’s bones, and of all uncleanness.” [2]  Beautifying the outer you is of no advantage if the inner you is in disrepair.

It Is More than Skin Deep

The bible has several references to our speech: "A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.”[3] Seest thou a man that is hasty in his words? there is more hope of a fool than of him.”[4] Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips:”[5]and "Death and life are in the power of the tongue:”[6]

What Does It All Mean?

God has made everything beautiful [7]  yet the choice is ours to maintain that beauty.  We can dress up the outer woman who everyone sees, but no surgery, makeup or fancy clothing will overshadow a rude, contemptuous, discontented attitude.  Make time to work on your inner beauty.  Find out how God created us to be beautiful then ask Him to help you line up with that.

True beauty is an inner peace, confidence in who you are based on Gods’ definition of woman, and conversations that leave the hearer in a better state than when they met you.
