A Vital Necessity
October 1, 2006By Joneen Horton

The EMT yells frantically; "We have a trauma 3 situation!” "What are his stats?” asks the lead doctor.  "Blood pressure is falling, heart beat is irregular and pulse is faint, we’re losing him!”  Immediately the emergency staff goes into a flurry of activity.

Scenes such as the one described above are played out daily in emergency facilities.  The loss of vital functions leads to death.  Did you know as born again believers we face this same death daily?

Vital: pertaining to life, essential to existence or well-being, critically important [1]

Vital signs: bodily symptoms indicative of basic bodily functions (heartbeat, pulse rate, respiratory rate, etc.) [2]

The Word of God is Vital

Jesus was aware that we cannot survive without the Word of God.  When tempted by Satan in the wilderness, Jesus responded by speaking the Word of God (see Matthew 4:4, 7, 10).  He told Satan "It has been written, Man shall not live and be upheld and sustained by bread alone, but by every word that comes forth from the mouth of God.”[3]

The Word of God is our Defense

Peter warns us: be vigilant and cautious at all times; for that enemy of yours, the devil, roams around like a lion roaring [in fierce hunger], seeking someone to seize upon and devour.[4]

Who can he devour? The woman who is without the Word of God. A woman without the Word is defenseless to respond when tempted.  One who is defenseless in the wilderness when under attack cannot fight back and the attack will lead to death, either spiritual and/or natural.

We must be armed with the Word at all times, it is our defense, it is our sword (see Ephesians 6:11-17).

The Word of God is Life

During our daily lives we will encounter opportunities that require us to respond.  At each of these moments, we must decide to either speak the Word of God or speak words contrary to His Word. (See Proverbs 18:20-21)

  1. Jesus said "…the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life. [5]   For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak. And I know that his commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak. " [6]

Just as Jesus only spoke as the Father directed Him, we should do likewise.

Maintaining our Vitals

To maintain our vitals we start by simply reading our bibles so we can know what is written and speak it. [7]

It’s by reading and meditating on the Word of God that when faced with an attack of sickness, you can say: "with His stripes I am healed.”   It’s by reading and mediating on the Word of God that when faced with an attack of hate you know that the commandment of Jesus is to love the Lord with all of your heart, soul, mind and strength and love your neighbor as yourself.

Breathing is simply inhaling and exhaling, we don’t even think about doing it, it’s natural -how we live.  Likewise being filled with the Word of God in your heart and speaking it is like breathing, it’s natural and how we live. For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. [8]

Read your bible, be ready to defend yourself and live!
