I AM
April 1, 2006By Joneen Horton

"Tell them I AM sent you.”  Exodus 3:14 (Amplified Bible)

There are four basic needs that every person has.   There is the need to feel accepted (to have companionship), to feel secure, to know ones identity and to know ones purpose.

Moses had a basic need

In the book of Exodus, when Moses asked God what should I tell the Israelites when they ask your name?[1]  He was not questioning God’s ability to do what He purposed, but rather, who am I to stand before these people and get them to follow me?  He wasn’t assured of his identity as a leader, so he needed the reassurance of our all powerful God.

Much like Moses, when faced with an obstacle, challenge or a command from God, we hesitate and ask who am I to do this? As women, we have several roles that require mastering several skills and utilizing wisdom, yet we only have one identity.

Identity Crisis

It’s when we do not know who we are based on the Word of God and His truth, that we suffer an identity crisis.  We try to figure out who we are.  In that quest, we often emulate others, use the world’s view of women or rely on our roles to define who we are.  Not being assured of our identity leads to inner turmoil as we begin to question our purpose, feel insecure and doubt the gifts and talents we have.

How do I find me?

Our search for who we are begins and ends with the scriptures and getting in the presence of God and seeking His face so that He will show us His way.

"Before I formed you in the womb I knew [and] approved of you [as My chosen instrument], and before you were born I separated and set you apart, consecrating you; [and] I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.” [2]

For those whom He foreknew [of whom He was aware and loved beforehand], He also destined from the beginning [foreordaining them] to be molded into the image of His Son [and share inwardly His likeness], that He might become the firstborn among many brethren. [3]

Our Father knows who we are.  Seek Him and He will not only reveal to you your unique identity, He will assist you in transforming into the woman He created you to be.
